hand-knit story props for The Mitten by Jan Brett

I'm so excited to share these little animals I knit to go along with The Mitten by Jan Brett!  Elise and I both love them so much, we're having trouble deciding who gets to sleep with them at night...  ;)

It was so much fun making this beloved story come to life.  Elise knew exactly what I was up to - she even helped me choose the yarn!

Whenever she overheard me telling someone about my project, she would start sneezing like the bear does at the end of the story,"Aaaa-choooo!!!!"

The Mitten is one of those stories that is especially fun to retell with props...

 Alone...

 ...or with a friend!

For all of you knitters out there, I made most of the animals from patterns I found on Ravelry.  The badger, mole, and mouse were my own inventions!

Here are a few pattern links, if you're feeling inspired to make your own set:

  1. Wow I'm so impressed!! What a talented mama you are, and Elise is very lucky! We don't know The Mitten but I'm curious now! Well done to you, it's fabulous.

    1. Thanks, Elsa! They were so much fun to make! Do you knit? The Mitten is a fun story to read aloud - the students in my class loved reading it at circle time. The paperback version is a little longer than the board book, but more of an entertaining read.

    2. I started knitting once upon a time but quickly stopped as I was so frustrated by my mistakes! I prefer to sew. I will have a look in the library to see if they have The Mitten.

    3. I wish I was better at sewing! I always have so many ideas, but it takes me forever to actually make something. Luckily, my mom lives close by and she is always willing to help! Right now I'm contemplating making some bean bags - should be easy, right?!

  2. What adorable creations! We love "The Mitten", too. I wish I know how to knit!!! I inquired about a knitting class some time ago. Now I'm more inspired to go and learn!

    1. Thank you! Oh, you should take a knitting class! Then you could make hats for your sweet little babe - or pretty scarves for yourself. :)

  3. What a fun way to make props for this story (we had always used paper animals and a mitten also made of paper)! Thank you for linking up to my hedgehog pattern on Ravelry --

    Cheers --

  4. Hi,
Do you sell these knitted animals and the mitten? I would so love to buy a set for my classroom if you did.
    Thanks

    1. No - I've thought about about giving it a try, but they take a looooong time! Plus, many of the patterns are copyrighted for personal use only. Thanks for asking - hopefully you can find or make a set for your classroom - I wish I would have had a set when I was teaching!
